English Folk Tales of Coast and Sea: storytelling by Lisa Schneidau ONLINE
November 3 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Do you know that a mermaid might choose to bless or curse you? Have you seen the ghosts of smugglers and wreckers that stalk the south coast of England? Do you follow the old wisdom, and do you know the day of the week you must not set sail?
England is a maritime nation. Our folklore and history is peppered with tall tales of the high seas: mysteries of the great ocean, the unknown world beneath the surface of the salt sea, and the liminal coast where the sea-gods meet our lives on the land.
Lisa Schneidau retells the old stories with a contemporary twist: dragons and monsters, sailor heroes and ghost ships, mermaids and shapeshifters. Immerse yourself in these salty sea stories, and learn about England’s heritage, magic and relationship to the mysterious ocean world that surrounds us.
This is a special online storytelling to celebrate the launch of Lisa’s new book English Folk Tales of Coast and Sea, published on 17th October in hardback, ebook (The History Press) and audiobook (narrated by Lisa) versions.
Some stories are quite strong, and so age limit of 14+ is advised for this session. There’ll be a break in the middle to recharge your blackjack with ale, and plenty of space in the snug for banter about marine folklore after the storytelling.
