DESCRIPTION:Stories and the Land: a one-day storytelling workshop\, outdoors!\nSunday 26th July 2020\n\n10am – 4.30pm\n\nChagford\, Devon\n\nA one-day workshop all about telling traditional stories and exploring the links between story and place. This day is for beginners and those who would like to improve their storytelling skills.\n\nWe will work with a British wonder tale to look at story structure\, character\, and idiosyncrasy; walk the story\, considering environment and audience; discuss ways to make a story come alive in honouring where it comes from; and work with techniques for remembering story and gaining confidence.\n\nBy the end of the day\, you will have had the opportunity to work and tell at least one story that you can take away and make your own.\n\nThis workshops will be held entirely outside\, with numbers strictly limited: social distancing and COVID-19 precautions and guidance will be observed\, and you will need to bring your own drinks and lunch.\n\nPlease note that the workshop will be walking to several different outdoor locations during the day\, depending on weather. We won’t cover more than a couple of miles but it’s a bit hilly in places. You will need to wear stout walking shoes\, dress appropriately for the weather and bring something to sit on. There will be a wet weather option in case the forecast is for downpours! Do let me know if you have any questions about accessibility or safety.\n\nPlaces are £35 per person. DESCRIPTION:  \nI will be storytelling at the Boscastle Museum of Witchcraft and Magic on the Saturday morning of this amazing event. You might also spot me dancing with Beltane Border Morris later on…. \nWise Women and Witches\nStories from the Isles of Britain \nThe venue will be the library at the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic.  Given the rarity of some of the books\, there is an absolute ban on any food and drink being brought into the library with no browsing of books permitted on this occasion. \nThere will be two shows\, 12 noon and 1.15pm (running time 50 minutes).  Suitable for ages 7+.  All children should be accompanied and supervised by an adult.  Places are limited\, booking is advised. All tickets are £5.00 plus booking fee. \n50% of the proceeds are being donated to the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic\, and the Dark Gathering. \nTickets can be booked at the web link here. \n

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin Dartmoor’s Daughter and storyteller Lisa Schneidau on a magical walk to discover the rich and diverse tales of British woodlands. From heroes and heroines to faeries\, woodwose and tree spirits\, this is a unique opportunity to spend time exploring the folklore and nature of Dartmoor’s wild places. \nUpland oak woodlands are mysterious places\, strewn with granite boulders and dripping with mosses and lichens. Here\, the English oak (Quercus robur\, translated to ’strong fine tree’) grows low and gnarly\, in a tangle with rowan trees\, bilberries and ferns. The oak is our national tree\, instantly recognisable across the countryside and throughout our folklore. \nOn this Midsummer walk\, we will discover stories of the mystical oak tree\, symbol of strength and courage\, and its place at the very heart of our traditions\, surrounded by the oak trees of Black a Tor Copse\, one of the best remaining examples of high altitude oak woodland left on the moor. \nLEVEL: MODERATE – Approximately 6 miles. You need to be comfortable walking in hilly and occasionally rocky or boggy moorland terrain. We will sit awhile in the copse to enjoy its unique beauty. \nWHAT TO BRING: Sturdy hiking boots\, warm layers\, waterproof jacket and trousers (whatever the forecast); something to sit on; picnic lunch and drink.\nDogs by arrangement only please. \nTIME/LOCATION: 9.45am for 10am walking start together at Meldon Reservoir car park near Okehampton. SUMMARY:Wildflower Folk Tales Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a storytelling walk where we will discover some of the flowers special to Dartmoor meadows\, and hear stories about plants that we find along the way. Expect tales from across Britain that inspire\, provoke curiosity and explore the connections between people and nature. \nWith beautiful views of Holne Moor to the west\, and set high at 1\,200 feet\, the field supports a stunning profusion of wildflowers and grasses in the summer\, with four kinds of orchid reaching their peak in mid-June – Southern Marsh\, Greater Butterfly\, Heath Spotted\, and Twayblade. Part of a larger group of small fields that make up a County Wildlife Site\, the field has had no applications of agricultural chemicals for a generation and has been managed for wildlife and biodiversity for several years. \nRalph and Jill Mackridge are custodians of this wildflower meadow. And in return for us walking through and exploring their beautiful field\, they have asked us for an hour’s volunteering time clearing bracken. Hopefully you’ll agree that this is a worthwhile endeavour and helps us to offer something back to Ralph\, Gill\, and the ecology of Dartmoor. \nLisa Schneidau is a a storyteller and environmentalist based on Dartmoor. Having worked in nature conservation for 20 years\, Lisa currently works with the Devon Wildlife Trust managing and developing landscape scale conservation programmes in north Devon. Lisa has been collecting and telling folk tales about plants for a forthcoming book. Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland is a story journey through the growing year\, with folk tales of the land and the wild trees and plants that surround us through the seasons\, in countryside\, town and city. It will be published by the History Press in spring 2018. Her maternal family has loved Dartmoor for generations. Her grandmother introduced her first husband Eric Hemery to Dartmoor in the 1950s where he set up and offered guided walks and pony treks then wrote a series of well regarded books including ‘High Dartmoor’ described as ‘the bible for anyone who has the spirit of Dartmoor’. \nLEVEL: MODERATE – Approximately 4 miles at a relaxed pace although you will need to be comfortable walking for 3-4 hours in hilly moorland terrain.
