SUMMARY:The World Tree - Wembury story walk
DESCRIPTION:In a world of magic and miracles\, Yggdrasil the ash tree holds all of creation in its roots and branches. Odin the Allfather hangs upside down from the great tree\, waiting for wisdom to come. But what happens when the ash tree falls sick? \n\n\n\nAsh is one of our most common trees\, bringing many gifts: timber\, fuel\, tools\, inspiration and protection. Now ash dieback is on the march through our countryside\, and in ten years’ time most of our ash trees will be lost. \n\n\n\nLisa Schneidau tells ancient stories from the Norse\, Irish and British traditions in this storytelling walk\, peppered with natural history and sharp observation. Find out how ash trees have always been at the centre of change – and why the old stories tell us of hope and renewal. \n\n\n\nThis session is part of the summer events series by Saving Devon’s Treescapes\, a project led by Devon Wildlife Trust on behalf of the Devon Ash Dieback Resilience Forum\, and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Read more about the project and find other ways to get involved here: https://www.devonwildlifetrust.org/what-we-do/our-projects/saving-devons-treescapes. \n\n\n\nThe event is open to all\, however\, we will be walking across a wooded area and the ground may be uneven. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Assistance dogs only please.  \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about this event then please contact Jasmine: jatkinson@devonwildlifetrust.org \n\n\n\nPlease note: The location shown on the map is not correct as the postcode does not take you to the exact location. When you register you will be sent directions.  \n\n\n\nTickets here

SUMMARY:Embercombe Rewilding Camp: Beyond the Fence
DESCRIPTION:This summer we are coming together to celebrate the exciting new journey that we are embarking on at Embercombe: An Exploration of Rewilding and Regeneration of land and people. This event is in partnership with the global ecosystem restoration movement\, Ecosystem Restoration Camps. \nComing together for 4 days this August 16th to 19th\, this is a kick off celebratory launch event of the new rewilding direction\, and we are inviting you to join us on this journey from the very beginning. The event will be split into 4 themes for the 4 days: Exploring Rewilding\, Flora and Fauna\, Rewilding the Self\, and Rewilding Society. \nTogether we will learn about what rewilding is and what it means for a context where humanity plays a key role and is embedded into the landscape\, rather than fenced out of it. We will learn from top practitioners in this field such as Laura Fairs\, ex Wildlife Trust and now the new Rewilding Lead at Embercombe as she takes us through what rewilding is and how it can be implemented on a small scale\, sharing Embercombe’s rewilding vision. \nWe will have the chance to ‘meet our kin’\, getting to know what is already living at Embercombe (trees\, birds\, plants) and how they interact with each other. We will take you on an exciting trip to Rewilding Coombeshead\, Derek Gow’s rewilding farm in North Devon\, where he will show you around and explain the rewilding practices and techniques that he has introduced\, as well as having the chance to meet the rare and fascinating species that he is reintroducing (beavers\, white storks and lynx!). \nWe will enjoy a summer barbeque as we learn how to conduct tests to collect data on soil health and biodiversity with bugs\, bats and reptiles\, taking our bat detectors into the woods at dusk and meet the moths at sunrise. \nThe last two days will focus on how we can live wilder and more connected lives and how we can reimagine and reinvent a wilder society. Mac Macartney\, founder of Embercombe and international inspirational speaker who weaves ancient indigenous insights together with modern 21st century ideas will share his vision and practices for rewilding the self. \nThe afternoon will be guided by Alana Bloom from Regenerating Rhythms and Gaia Harvey Jackson\, both experienced facilitators of practices that will help you tune in what inner rewilding looks\, smells\, and feels like and how you can incorporate these into your everyday lives. We will finish our evening with tales of the wild things from storyteller Lisa Schneidau. \nThe final day will look at the fundamental stories and belief systems that our society tells that have created the depleted landscapes that we live in today. Guided by Ashleigh Brown from Ecosystem Restoration Camps\, we will deconstruct these stories and write and perform new ones together that are able to birth the rewilded world that our hearts desire. \nThis unique event will give you the chance to get under the skin of rewilding our landscapes\, our hearts\, our minds\, our communities and our world as we gather together under the summer sun. Don’t miss it.

SUMMARY:Stories of Place: a one-day storytelling workshop
DESCRIPTION:Stories and the Land: a one-day storytelling workshop\, outdoors!\nSunday 26th July 2020\n\n10am – 4.30pm\n\nChagford\, Devon\n\nA one-day workshop all about telling traditional stories and exploring the links between story and place. This day is for beginners and those who would like to improve their storytelling skills.\n\nWe will work with a British wonder tale to look at story structure\, character\, and idiosyncrasy; walk the story\, considering environment and audience; discuss ways to make a story come alive in honouring where it comes from; and work with techniques for remembering story and gaining confidence.\n\nBy the end of the day\, you will have had the opportunity to work and tell at least one story that you can take away and make your own.\n\nThis workshops will be held entirely outside\, with numbers strictly limited: social distancing and COVID-19 precautions and guidance will be observed\, and you will need to bring your own drinks and lunch.\n\nPlease note that the workshop will be walking to several different outdoor locations during the day\, depending on weather. We won’t cover more than a couple of miles but it’s a bit hilly in places. You will need to wear stout walking shoes\, dress appropriately for the weather and bring something to sit on. There will be a wet weather option in case the forecast is for downpours! Do let me know if you have any questions about accessibility or safety.\n\nPlaces are £35 per person. Book through Paypal by making your payment to email address lisaschneidau@hotmail.com\, or email me for BACS payment details.\n\n

SUMMARY:Storytelling events Spring-Summer 2020... news...
DESCRIPTION:I’ve taken down storytelling events planned for Spring and Summer 2020 at present\, due to the ongoing uncertainty with the Coronavirus. There are many plans afoot\, including Beyond the Border\, Festival at the Edge and Oxford Storytelling Festival… not to mention some wild and woolly storytelling on Dartmoor\, and virtual storytelling and nature projects in development. (This little fellow is the Wren of Craftiness\, the King of the Birds\, for some inspiration on that front; it’s a difficult time for all artists.) \nI will confirm events as the situation becomes clearer… in the meantime\, please do email me with any queries on particular events. \nThank you – stay well out there and best wishes to all.

SUMMARY:Oak Mysteries
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin Dartmoor’s Daughter and storyteller Lisa Schneidau on a magical walk to discover the rich and diverse tales of British woodlands. From heroes and heroines to faeries\, woodwose and tree spirits\, this is a unique opportunity to spend time exploring the folklore and nature of Dartmoor’s wild places. \nUpland oak woodlands are mysterious places\, strewn with granite boulders and dripping with mosses and lichens. Here\, the English oak (Quercus robur\, translated to ’strong fine tree’) grows low and gnarly\, in a tangle with rowan trees\, bilberries and ferns. The oak is our national tree\, instantly recognisable across the countryside and throughout our folklore. \nOn this Midsummer walk\, we will discover stories of the mystical oak tree\, symbol of strength and courage\, and its place at the very heart of our traditions\, surrounded by the oak trees of Black a Tor Copse\, one of the best remaining examples of high altitude oak woodland left on the moor. \nLEVEL: MODERATE – Approximately 6 miles. You need to be comfortable walking in hilly and occasionally rocky or boggy moorland terrain. We will sit awhile in the copse to enjoy its unique beauty. \nWHAT TO BRING: Sturdy hiking boots\, warm layers\, waterproof jacket and trousers (whatever the forecast); something to sit on; picnic lunch and drink.\nDogs by arrangement only please. \nTIME/LOCATION: 9.45am for 10am walking start together at Meldon Reservoir car park near Okehampton. The car park is on the approach road to the dam. Grid Reference is SX 561 917. Nearest postcode is EX20 4LU but please don’t rely on your sat nav to get you to the exact location\, it probably won’t! \nCar sharing is encouraged please. Post a message in this FB event page or email info@dartmoorsdaughter.com if you can offer/need a lift. \nFEE: £25 per adult. Group size is limited so pre-booking essential. A small portion of your fee will be given to:\n*Donate for Dartmoor\nhttp://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/wildlife-and-heritage/our-conservation-work/donate-for-dartmoor\n*Dartmoor Search & Rescue Teams http://www.dartmoor-rescue.org/donate.html \nThe walk and folk tales are designed for adults. Older\, engaged children by agreement only. \nORGANISERS:\nDartmoor’s Daughter creates walks and nature-connection experiences to transform health\, wellbeing and performance. \nLisa Schneidau is a storyteller and environmentalist based on Dartmoor.
