SUMMARY:Chasing Crockern
DESCRIPTION:On a stormy night on Dartmoor\, a midwife is woken by a strange-looking man whose wife needs urgent help. Driving at breakneck speed through lanes that become increasingly unfamiliar\, she arrives at a mysterious old cottage where things are not quite what they seem. As mist rolls over ancient granite\, tors move and rivers speak\, the midwife realises that this midnight call for help has had some unexpected consequences … \n\n\n\nChasing Crockern blends storytelling for adults with the sounds and voices of Dartmoor to bring the spirit of the moor alive in a new way for today’s audiences. Guided by storytellers Sara Hurley and Lisa Schneidau\, you’ll hear ancient creation myths and medieval legends\, folktales\, and everyday adventures in a show that blurs the boundaries between folklore and reality. \n\n\n\nWhether Dartmoor feels like home or remains a mystery\, this performance invites you to immerse yourself in its stories and uncover its timeless magic — revealed\, reimagined\, and alive. \n\n\n\nChasing Crockern takes its name from Sabine Baring-Gould’s tale of Old Crockern. The performance has emerged from a series of community events\, school workshops\, story walks\, and talks with elders across Dartmoor over the past year. \n\n\n\nGenerously supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England\, using money raised by National Lottery players\, this project is a collaboration between Dartmoor-based storytellers Sara Hurley and Lisa Schneidau and Devon arts charity Villages in Action. \n\n\n\nThis show is designed for adults and is suitable for ages 13+.

SUMMARY:English Folk Tales of Coast and Sea - at Dartington
DESCRIPTION:England is a maritime nation. Our folklore and history is peppered with tall tales of the high seas: mysteries of the great ocean\, the unknown world beneath the surface of the salt sea\, and the liminal coast where the sea-gods meet our lives on the land.Join us for an evening with popular author and professional storyteller Lisa Schneidau\, as she presents stories from her new collection of traditional folk tales from the coasts and seas of England. Lisa retells the old stories with a contemporary twist: dragons and monsters\, sailor heroes and ghost ships\, mermaids and shapeshifters. Come and be immersed in these salty sea stories\, and learn about England’s heritage\, magic and relationship to the mysterious ocean world that surrounds us. \n\n\n\nThis event will be followed by a book signing.Lisa Schneidau’s book will be for sale at its cost price of £14.99 during the event\, or we are offering a special pre-order deal of £18 for a ticket & book option.‘Lisa Schneidau has an environmentalist’s eye and a storyteller’s heart\, weaving together both precision and passion in this utterly engaging new collection of seafaring stories. The author has dived deep into the ocean of folktales and legends from every corner of coastal England\, pulling up a treasure-hoard of shimmering stories that deserve to be shared widely. A few of the tales I was aware of\, but many were brand new to me – a testament to her diligence and delight in researching the source material. As someone who lives by the sea\, this feels like a book to be dipped into often and enjoyed as much as the salty sea itself.’ — Martin Maudsley
