SUMMARY:The Tangle of the Commons
DESCRIPTION:Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing\, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. \nRumi \nThe Tangle of the Commons tells the story of the British landscape and our relationship with the wild things around us\, seen and unseen. Who really owns this place – and what happens if humans push things too far? \nHere are some of the old tales\, laced with history\, ecology and a hefty dose of the ridiculous\, to provoke thought and inspiration about the land we usually take so much for granted. Expect malevolent fairies\, dastardly robber kings\, slimy boggarts and a particularly disgruntled wild pig. \n  \nThis is the first outing for the full length performance of The Tangle of the Commons. \nTickets £7.50 in advance\, £9 on the door. More info on bookings shortly.

SUMMARY:The Tangle of the Commons - King's Nympton
DESCRIPTION:Wild plants surround us and shape every aspect of our lives: the food on our plates\, the clothes on our backs\, and the places we live. SUMMARY:Wildflower Folk Tales Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a storytelling walk where we will discover some of the flowers special to Dartmoor meadows\, and hear stories about plants that we find along the way. Expect tales from across Britain that inspire\, provoke curiosity and explore the connections between people and nature. \nWith beautiful views of Holne Moor to the west\, and set high at 1\,200 feet\, the field supports a stunning profusion of wildflowers and grasses in the summer\, with four kinds of orchid reaching their peak in mid-June – Southern Marsh\, Greater Butterfly\, Heath Spotted\, and Twayblade. Part of a larger group of small fields that make up a County Wildlife Site\, the field has had no applications of agricultural chemicals for a generation and has been managed for wildlife and biodiversity for several years. \nRalph and Jill Mackridge are custodians of this wildflower meadow. And in return for us walking through and exploring their beautiful field\, they have asked us for an hour’s volunteering time clearing bracken. Hopefully you’ll agree that this is a worthwhile endeavour and helps us to offer something back to Ralph\, Gill\, and the ecology of Dartmoor. \nLisa Schneidau is a a storyteller and environmentalist based on Dartmoor. Having worked in nature conservation for 20 years\, Lisa currently works with the Devon Wildlife Trust managing and developing landscape scale conservation programmes in north Devon. Lisa has been collecting and telling folk tales about plants for a forthcoming book. Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland is a story journey through the growing year\, with folk tales of the land and the wild trees and plants that surround us through the seasons\, in countryside\, town and city. It will be published by the History Press in spring 2018. You can find out more about Lisa’s work at www.lisaschneidau.co.uk \nDartmoor’s Daughter creates walks & nature-connection experiences to transform health\, wellbeing\, and performance. SUMMARY:Botanical Folk Tales Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland is a collection of folk tales with a difference: all the stories involve trees and plants. The book was written on Dartmoor by storyteller and conservationist Lisa Schneidau\, with stunning cover illustrations by Chagford artist David Wyatt. It’s the result of a storyteller’s search for traditional folk tales about the botany of these islands\, the wild trees and plants that surround us through the seasons\, in countryside\, town and city. \nThe book contains stories for all ages. There are tales about giant pumpkins and travelling trees\, fairies that curse bad farmers\, willows that talk and an enchanted coat of moss. The book follows the growing year\, from the snowdrops braving the Highland winds and piskie tulips by the river Tamar\, to bad-tempered dandelions\, chattering junipers\, fields full of ragwort and magic apple trees. \nBotanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland is published by the History Press on 19th March\, priced at £9.99. \nCome and help me launch the new book in Chagford\, where most of it was written!

SUMMARY:Storytelling Sunday: Spirits of Place and Time
DESCRIPTION:This workshop considers the context of stories: the all-important small details that set the scene. It’s a day for beginners and experienced storytellers alike. \nAll too often\, stories are told from an indeterminate time and place\, ‘once upon a time somewhere in the world’. How about placing your story in historical time\, and actual place? What would they be? We will play with story in different times and landscapes\, talk about honouring the source of a story\, and discuss the ethics of telling stories from other places and traditions. We will also (weather permitting) go out into the countryside to explore how to become closer to the landscape of the story you’re telling\, and look at the use of detail in storytelling. \nWorkshops are £55 for the day (10am – 4.30pm)\, including teas / coffees and materials. SUMMARY:Storytelling Sunday: Through Different Eyes
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore story from the perspective of different characters\, and from members of the audience. It’s a day for beginners and experienced storytellers alike. \nWe will use a Norse myth to explore how different characters might live\, feel\, and act\, and discuss how this can enrich our telling. We will then walk individual stories from the perspective of the villain\, the hero\, the maiden and any number of other human and non-human characters\, and share our findings! Used with care and measure\, these techniques can bring empathy and integrity to a telling. I hope you’ll find different perspectives to use in your own stories. \nWorkshops are £55 for the day (10am – 4.30pm)\, including teas / coffees and materials. There is a discount available on three workshops if you book them all together before 8th October (£150 for the three). \nBooking is essential\, as places are limited. Full payment for the workshop will secure your place. \nTo book\, please fill in the attached booking form here Booking form Storytelling Sundays – Autumn 2017 and send it back to me. SUMMARY:Botanical Tales with Johan Allerfeldt
DESCRIPTION:This will be a special evening in Gidleigh Village Hall. \nI will be sharing some British folk tales from the new book\, all with a botanical flavour\, in honour of the Reverend Keble Martin (author of the Concise British Flora). I have discovered that not only did the Rev. Keble Martin live in Great Torrington for some years\, but he also lived in Gidleigh for nine years. Where will he be next I wonder? \nThere will be music in between stories from the extremely talented Johan Allerfeldt\, playing the grand piano that they keep at Gidleigh. I have never heard piano improvisation like this. Highly recommended. \nTickets are £6 and can be reserves through Bill Murray: email dartmoorbill@yahoo.com or phone 01647  231297. The evening is in aid of the new heating installation at the village hall.

We will consider character\, description\, action and emotion\, and discuss the ‘hero’s journey’ and our own experiences. We will then work through individual tales to play with\, and strengthen story structure\, and to explore pace and balance in telling. I hope this workshop will help you develop confidence throughout a telling. \nWorkshops are £55 for the day (10am – 4.30pm)\, including teas / coffees and materials.
